(More customer reviews)I was so excited to see this Wooden Cutting Fruit Crate because my older daughter and niece have the old Cutting Food Box but since we are gluten free the fruit seemed like a nice addition for the little kids. Unfortunately it is not nearly the same quality. The pieces don't seem to fit together as snuggly and the velcro isn't as strong so it is more as if the fruit falls apart instead of the cutting sensation the first set has. Also the wooden food itself doesn't feel as substantial/heavy and it doesn't come in a box with a lid like the older set. I don't know if the quality of the Cutting food box has gone down as well or if it is just this set, but I am pretty disappointed.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Ice Cream Parlor Set Review

(More customer reviews)My daughter (3 years old) got this for her birthday. It was a big hit! All the kids loved playing with it. Even some of the parents were trying it out.
The cones are made of wood--so they're heavy and if you drop it on your toes, watch out! But the ice cream itself is a lightweight, very durable plastic.
I would highly recommend this product to any kids. I'm thinking of purchasing a second set just for when friends come over, that way they can each have a cone!
One thing I would like to recommend to the Melissa and Doug company, is for them to come out with a "Ice cream parlour 2" set. Maybe some more ice cream scoop flavors (orange sherbet, berry swirl, etc) or just extra cones. Even just a set of extra ice cream would be nice. Overall, it's a great set. Very good quality, as is all the Melissa & Doug toys we've bought. Your kids will love it!

Melissa & Doug Food Groups Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted good wooden pretend food (hate plastic toys) and I wanted a nice starter selection for a good price without having to buy, say, a separate veggie or fruit set. This is a basic food groups set so you get (4) little wooden crates filled with meats, veggies-n-fruits, dairy, and grains.
That said, after receiving the product, I can confirm that buying separate sets would have yielded superior pretend food, but would have quadrupled the investment. Besides, the kids love it and engage in all the rich, imaginative and independent play parents love to peripherally watch while reading the newspaper or something.
In summary,
Pros:
-All wood, nice all-in-one selection
-Kids like it a lot
Cons:
-Made in China
-All the produce is smaller than life-size -- even the egg and lemon (whereas the individual sets include many life-size items)
-Paint from some of the produce arrived scuffed onto other produce (enough to induce a mildly annoyed "come-on" but not enough to initiate a return or obsess over)

(More customer reviews)This toy gets 4 stars because after 1 day my daughter broke out the wooden divider, and the extensive pieces.
My daughter loves this toy! It is one of her favorite play foods, and I am about sick of pizza! There are quite a few pieces to the set and I would not recommend this for a household where elements of toys are easily destroyed or lost. The velcro attaches easily.
This is a great toy to begin teaching counting and fractions. We also own the Cutting Food Box by Lights, Camera, Interaction. We were initially introduced to these great toy products by my aunt who teaches violin. She uses these toys to explain musical notation and fractions. The utilization of this toy for introductory math has been invaluable for teaching our daughter. Sometimes we don't realize how much she understands these concepts. The parts hold up extremely well to the 2 1/2 year old age group, but I must reiterate - these are not for a family that doesn't not keep up with parts to games or toys. It is also a toy that is best used with hands-on adult expaination. The most educational experience can be derived that way (I guess, as with all things in life.)
What is especially fun is when she mixes the 2 toys together and I get a slice of pizza with a carrot or watermelon slice on it.

Melissa & Doug Wooden Sushi Review

(More customer reviews)We got this in at the store I work at, and we were all enchanted! This was the very first time any of us had seen a set of play food for young children of sushi!
Three kinds of sushi come with shrimp, tuna, salmon roe, and egg pieces. The proper condiments are included: ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce, and of course, chopsticks! The round "dots" on the sushi rolls are velcro, so that you can stick the pieces together and slice through them with the play cleaver, and the velcro even gives it an almost authentic chopping sound!
It is just lovely to look at. All of the pieces are solid wood, and beautifully painted. The box is in black with details of cherry blossoms, and it has a "menu" on the back for restauraunt pretend play!
I plan to get one for a friend's child, but I have to admit that I'm really tempted to buy one for myself, too!

(More customer reviews)I was very pleased with the food sets we purchased last year for Christmas. My daughter loves to play with them.
One note worth mentioning is that the "patty" started peeling paint. I know my daughter isn't chewing on it, so I really don't know what caused this.
With all the lead-paint scares, I promptly threw it away. This product is manufactured in China. I'm not saying that it may have lead paint or anything like that, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
All in all, they're very durable food items and fun. Just regularly check for chips in the paint to be safe.

Melissa & Doug Bake and Decorate Cupcake Set Review

(More customer reviews)We have a lot of Melissa and Doug items and we're always generally very impressed with them. The cupcake set is great fun and our six year old wanted it so much that she bought it with her own money. To start off with, it's a high quality toy. They're basically wooden cupcakes with candles that velcro on top. The whole concept of the icing markers is fun and all the kids (friends included) enjoy "decorating" the cupcakes. The part you draw on is a sort of plastic lid that fits over the wooden cupcake and is supposed to look like icing. It even comes with a little baking tin (wooden) and an oven mitt. There are paper cupcake liners in fun patterns included that aren't going to last forever, but hey...they are paper. We've generally got liners in the pantry so that's not a huge deal.
The big flaw in this toy is that the wooden cupcakes are not finished in a type of paint that will allow you to wipe the dry erase marker off of them. Only the plastic "icing" can be erased. Admittedly if you look at the very fine print on the back of the box it reads "Markers are intended for wipe-off icing surfaces only. Do not use markers on other components." Realistically however, giving kids some dry erase markers and letting them go to town on pretend cupcakes, is going to result in the entire cupcake getting "decorated." In the scheme of things it doesn't really matter because my daughter loves them anyway, but it does keep me from giving this toy Melissa and Doug's usual high approval rating. If this is something that is going to upset you or your child, you'd be better off buying another of their products.

The oven mitt is a nice touch too! You receive 6 of each topping--great for making patterns. The velcro that attaches them seems very durable. The box is heavy cardboard so it will last (but may not as long as the rest of the set). Only complaint is wish the large box it comes in had a lid so it could all be stored together but we'll just put it in a tub.

(More customer reviews)I bought this toy for my almost three year old who loves tea parties. What is a tea party without a cake stand of goodies! She initially had very little interest in it but her 4 year old and 1 year old sister loved it. The 4 year old loves changing out the toppings on the cakes and the one year old enjoys chewing on the cake pieces. I like that it is very durable (they have been very rough on it) and even after almost 2 months of being thrown around and chewed on the paint is still perfect on it. I think it is a great accessory for a girl who wants something special for her tea party and I love that it is also a shape puzzle. I just wish my three year old had been more interested in it!

Since they came out of the box she has been "seasoning" her play cooking with these bottles. The magnets keep the caps on nice and tight, but it is still easy to remove them if you want. I also like that I can use them to work on her colors, since the caps match the bottles. Only disappointment is that the storage tray does not come with them anymore. I was a little upset by that. The picture on the box shows the tray, and the box even says it includes the tray. But no tray was to be found. Total bummer.

This one was no exception, but I will point out that I was a little surprised and disappointed that the "boxed groceries" (cereal, sugar, crackers, etc.) were only labeled/printed on one side of the package with the back side being just solid-color paint. I just saw, however, that this item, along with 2 other M&D toys, has been recalled in Canada for unsafe Barium levels in the paint. I am returning it, as I don't want to take the risk.
