Hasbro i-Dog Robotic Music Loving Canine - White Review

Hasbro i-Dog Robotic Music Loving Canine - White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this little guy dancing to the music in a store, and the next thing you know, he had come home with me! idog is a real cutie. Though you could use him as an ipod mono speaker -- and yes, I consider the speaker pretty robust for such a diminutive pooch -- I think he shines the brightest as a palm-sized portable light show for your music. The LED light display on his face is something to see, with a variety of colors and animated patterns that adapt to the music you play, and from time to time idog will wag his head and raise or lower his ears in time to the beat. Throw in the doggy behavior -- he mopes if you leave him alone without music and growls when you turn him off -- and idog is a most amusing desktop companion. I am definitely looking forward to the idog bags, as it would be fun to bring him to a party, and the bags look like they would give his head the support he needs to travel without injury. I also saw a picture of the mini-mutt wearing one of his "chill sets" -- a hat, ear muffs, and sweater to ward off the cold weather -- and it was hilarious to be sure. I use rechargeable AAA batteries in idog and get hours of use on a charge. A great little pal for all the music lovers on your shopping list!

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Beginner Band Set Review

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Beginner Band Set
Average Reviews:

The whole set looks and feels unfinished. The wood is rough and uncured.
Xylophone is totally useless. Keys are made of wood. It hardly makes any sound and when it does it sounds very off-key.
Rattlers and harmonica work fine. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it.

Blue Hat Toy Company Little Tunes MP3 Player Review

Blue Hat Toy Company Little Tunes MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I bought ours for $29.99 from Carson Pirie Scott brand new (it's a pricey department store FYI and it was "marked down" from $60). Whoever this vendor is, they are RIPPING YOU OFF!!!
But even at $30 I have not been too pleased. I bought 2, one for us and one for a christmas present. One of the 2 was broken when I got home. I exchanged it for another. Our toddler has been using ours for a month when it broke too! Then when we tried to plug it into the computer, the USB port broke off and is now rattling around in the case! (And no, I do know what I am doing and didn't use excessive force.)
This is really too bad because our toddler LOVES it and has taken it everywhere (dr office, store, long car ride). He can work the buttons just fine, and has thrown it and stepped on it without it skipping or powering down. It seems well-designed for little hands that aren't too gentle. In fact, when it broke we had just turned it off for the night and then it didn't turn on again in the morning for reason...
The battery life is pretty good. I would say we got about 2 weeks of near nonstop use out of each set of batteries. I wish it was rechargeable.
So, last week this would have gotten 5 stars. Now it gets 2.
UPDATE: We replaced this with the $60 SweetPea 3. It is so superior to the Blue Hat!! It is sturdier, smaller yet still 100% useable by little fingers, has 4 times the memory, the same battery life with just 1 battery instead of 4, and has actual firmware so you can make playlists, adjust the auto turnoff time, etc. Plus the volume knob is hidden, and it resumes at the same song it was on when it turned off, instead of the BH one which starts over at the beginning every time. The only thing it doesn't have that the Blue Hat had was a scrolling song titles. BUY THE SWEETPEA!

Little Tikes Jungle Jamboree Tiger Piano and Xylophone Review

Little Tikes Jungle Jamboree Tiger Piano and Xylophone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After taking my 8 month old to a friends house where he loved their kids xylophone and especially the full sized piano we got this toy for our son.
Yes the strings are short and a little one doesn't know how to hold the mallet handles on their own, but I can position the mallets in his hands properly and he does just fine. They are just long enough to be able to strike all the surface of each bar with the end just fine.
It is very sturdy. My 8mo old likes to bang on it pretty hard and so far we've had no problems with it coming apart.
My big gripe with it, though, is that two of the bars are clearly out of tune (the 3rd and 8th from the lowest pitch). It looks like they just cut the bars using an evenly increasing size rather than properly sizing them to match a major diatonic scale. I know this probably isn't a big deal, but I'm really sensitive to things being in tune, and besides do you want your developing kid to get used to a musical scale that's out of tune?

U-Dance Review

U-Dance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game rocks. It tracks your feet like magic--however you move, that's what you see on the screen. The dancing starts easy, and gets really tough on the hard levels. It really gets you dancing, even someone like me who can't dance at all. We've tried Dance Dance Revolution, but that doesn't feel at ALL like dancing, this one really does feel like dancing. You actually need to sweep your feet, jump, cross...My 7 year old loves it, and it's also really great exercise, it got me sweating. Even my 4 year old can play one of the games that comes with it (the funny lizard one). The song selection is great too--there are new songs I don't know (yes, I'm a Dad), but some great older songs like ABC (Jackson 5). I would never spend the money on a Wii, but this is totally worth it. It takes a little bit to really get used to the menus, but once you do it's totally intuitive. When we hit the rainy season, this is going to be a great way to keep the kids exercising (without them knowing it...)

Wish these kid clips had been around when I was raising my children. They are great for car rides and good entertainment for having to stay put in a car seat on long trips. We all sing along with my granddaughter as she easily changes the clips herself and sometimes plays her favorites over and over and over again! ;-)

Fisher-Price Crawl-Along Drum Roll Review

Fisher-Price Crawl-Along Drum Roll
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my son who is just starting to sit up on his own for longer than 5 minutes and who likes to hit. When I put this in front of him, and the lights started flashing and the music began to play, his face turned to immediate concentration. This is the first time I've seen him look this way since he was trying to figure out his pesky hands and arms a couple of months ago. He loved it! For a parent who really loves music and wants to share that with their child, this is one of the more fun musical instrument toys out there for this age-range. I know he doesn't quite get what he's doing, but the joy on his face is enough for me!

The rock beat rhythm sticks seem to be just as fun as anticipated. They work and my children seem to enjoy them.
Unfortunately, this company, Music For Little People does not provide good customer service. They sent the incorrect item first. Then when they were contacted they wouldn't ship out the correct item until they got the first item back. In the mean time the birthday party I ordered these toys for has come and gone. I ordered these over four weeks ago and just recieved them.
If you want a fun toy these might be a treat.

eebee's adventures: FIGURING THINGS OUT Review

eebee's adventures: FIGURING THINGS OUT
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought all three of the Eebee DVDs and would recommend them. Of the three, I'd suggest starting with "All in a days' play" if you only get one. That's the first we bought.
What we liked most about Eebee is it featured only scenes of adults, babies, and Eebee playing different games. No computer graphics, no cartoons, no dumb jokes that only an adult would get. You only see things that a child might actually see in real life. It's a refreshing change to finally find a DVD actually made for children!
My son loves watching it and over time understood what was happening. We could play the same games in person, and the DVD gave us some great ideas. The DVD features different children and adults, and they limit Eebee to doing things that any toddler might do. Our son also watches some Japanese kids shows, as well as some other DVDs made by other companies, but they don't really compare. They're too abstract, and at times annoying. Put simply, Eebee keeps it real.
The one thing to note is there is only about 30 minutes of playtime on this DVD, with another 30 minutes of commentary explaining the best way to play the games shown. That said, when I compared with other DVDs I got like Baby Einstein, they were full of graphics, adverstisements, logos, and filler material (not to mention lots of corny jokes my son doesn't get). Baby Einstein is hit and miss for us, and in my opinion not really worth it by comparison. I'd return it if I hadn't got it on sale. Although we'd like to have seen more footage in Eebee, 30 minutes turns out to be about as much as my son will watch in 1 or 2 sittings anyways.
I eventually bought all three DVDs and emailed the makers encouraging them to make more. The funny thing was I only found out about these DVDs because my son liked the Eebee plush toy at our local store, then I found out about the DVDs and ordered one off Amazon. He responded very positively to it around 10 months, although we didn't let him watch regularly until later.

Okay, so my 1 year old son was facinated with this piano. But it sounds horrible. I mean Awful. In fact, we were afraid that the sound, which is very and very and VERY off tune, will ruin his musical inclination. I dont mind the chime - but its too off tune. So we packed it up and back it goes.

Pocket Pal Harmonica Review

Pocket Pal Harmonica
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is probably the second harmonica I ever bought. Now I have 10+. It's really a pretty nice little harp. It's cheap enough that I can really do a number on it without worrying about breaking or gumming up a reed. Great for when I want to save some of my pricer harps. It's constructed a bit like the special twenty and sounds probably closes to that, but a little less pretty. It's been durable and enjoyable. Well worth the price.
I should also mention that it doesn't come with a plastic case like the other Hohners.

Leapfrog Learn and Groove Radio Review

Leapfrog Learn and Groove Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This may have it's place but it is not as a "radio". I mistaken purchased this thinking it had 30 "songs" on it, what it actually has is 30 different pictures on little half moon discs that you flip to see different pictures and if you press the button next to the picture it plays a "tune and sings" for a few seconds about the picture. We also noticed that it only has a couple different tunes and just changes the word for the picture. It has a sippy cup with white in it and one with orange in it the tune just plays and says milk or juice depending on the color etc. The round ball in the center draws attention but when it's touched or bummed even lightly by accident it changes from english to spanish/spanish to english. This is meant to teach children words but some of the pictures I didn't even know what they were like the pajamas. I feel calling it a radio with 30 different songs is misleading we sent it back and will keep looking for a "radio" that plays childrens songs.

Plan Toy Solid Wood Drum Review

Plan Toy Solid Wood Drum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you look at the design, you will see the center is more "cut out" than the rest. While this is necessary to allow for different sounds, this center piece of wood needs to be thicker. My 2 yr old Grandson broke that piece after playing with it for about an hour or so. {It was broken by being hit with the drumstick} The toy had to be thrown out. there was no repairing it as the break was sharp and dangerous.
While it does help the child create many different sound & again, all that is needed is to make that one piece of wood thicker. It is a good toy for musical education otherwise. But the "Otherwise" is a biggie! I'll be writing to the manufacturer about this as well.

Shake, Rattle, & Drum Review

Shake, Rattle, and Drum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased the Shake, Rattle, & Drum for our twin 1 year old boys and they absolutely love it. We know that this is recommended for ages 3 and above, but they have been pounding on everything they could get their hands on so we figured they'd love it. At their age we only let them use it with adult supervision because they want to put everything in their mouth and we figure that isn't prudent because of them ingesting the paint. The red rattle is a little loud so that may only come out for special occasions. I'd recommend this for budding musicians that like to pound on things.

Fisher Price Little Super Star Classical Stacker Review

Fisher Price Little Super Star Classical Stacker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my son's favorite toy, and for eleven bucks that's quite a deal. He literally can play with this toy for hours if given the opportunity. He's learned to press the button on the top that plays the music, and as soon as he does, he looks at everyone in the room and gives them a "look how smart I am" smile. It's hilarious! He's just now learning (at 12 months) how to put the stars back on the base. He couldn't do this a couple of months ago; he could only get them off, so it has grown with him. I put scotch tape over the speaker because there is no volume control and it can be quite loud. The tape still lets the tunes be heard, but now I don't have to talk over it! My mother is a daycare provider and she also has this toy, and her children love it, too; they even fought over it until she bought another one. That means I know of at least three children who can't get enough of this toy. It's worth its weight in gold!
