Melissa & Doug Children of the World Floor 48-Piece Floor Puzzle Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)My 3-year-old and I really like working on this puzzle together. (She can't do it alone. I expect a 4-year-old could. The recommended 6-9 age seems too old.) I think the size of a floor puzzle gives her more of a sense of accomplishment than a standard sized puzzle.
The pieces link nicely so that you get a bit of the next person as you go around the circle. (The last piece of the American boy links into the Chinese girl so you know which character to look for next.)
The pictures of kids from other countries gives a segue to the concept of people from other parts of the world. And they list the country names, so you don't have to feel like an idiot. ;)
Melissa & Doug never let me down. This is another good, quality toy.

Melissa & Doug 60 Piece Land of Dinosaurs Jigsaw Puzzle Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The colors and design of this puzzle are nice and it has some exciting dinos on it for sure. However, the top layer of several pieces started to come loose after only one use of the puzzle. My son is young and not necessarily gentle with his puzzles, but the other puzzles we have from this company are quite durable, so I was a bit disappointed. Also, it does not come with a pull-out picture of the entire puzzle or a key to tell you the names of the dinosaurs in the puzzle, which would be so nice.

Melissa & Doug Alphabet Train Floor Puzzle Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Typical of this manufacturer, the graphics are high quality and the cardboard is thick and durable.
The cuts on the puzzle are divided so that one piece is one train car. (Other puzzles by other manufacturers can be put together without ever knowing or dealing with the alphabet.) The only way to construct this puzzle is to know the proper order of the English alphabet and attach them in that manner. Each piece contains both the upper and lower case letter and an illustration to go along with that letter.
My son began playing with this when he was three and did not yet know the letters by sight. He did know the alphabet song. I found the way to play this with the least frustration and the most educational value is for me to play alongside him. I let him piece them together until he asks for help (before he is angry). We sing the alphabet song together to find the next letter in the alphabet. If he doesn't know it by sight he asks for help and I give phonetic clues such as "G makes a sound like "gg", what do you see that starts off like that sound" at which point he finds the goldfish. One complaint though is that the goldfish is sometimes mistaken for just a fish and the F. I wish something more blatantly "g" was chosen for that one. We progress in this manner until it is done. I feel this has helped him learn the letters by their sight.
The appeal for my son was that this is a train related toy. Learning the alphabet was a byproduct that he was not aware was actually my key motive in buying this.
I also appreciate both upper and lower case letters being shown as sometimes alphabet toys and activities use just one or the other.
If you like this type of learning activity I'd also suggest the numbers puzzle by this same manufacturer to help learn the numbers by sight.

Melissa & Doug Horses 48pc Floor Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)We got this for our daughter when she was 4 years old. She is now 5 years old and still has difficulty putting this puzzle together. She loves puzzles and has many of them (30 or so). This by far is the most difficult puzzle and in fact, the only one she needs help putting together. However, it is a beautiful puzzle which the whole family loves. We love talking about the different breeds of horses. I just think that amazon's age recommendations should be adjusted some. I think this would be better suited for a 7 or 8 year old than a 3 year old.

Melissa & Doug Dinosaurs 48 pcs Floor Puzzle Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)As with all cardboard puzzles by Lights, Camera, Interaction! the quality is outstanding. The cardboard is thick and durable. The illustration is well-printed and the pieces are glossy. If not abused this puzzle will last generations. The pieces are strong enough not to get worn when our 2 year old tries to fit two pieces together that truly don't fit together!
The subject matter of dinosaurs is much appreciated. The scene is illustrated in detail. My 2 year old and my 5 year old love this puzzle.
A great gift for a birthday, for a 3, 4, or 5 year old.
