Playskool Talk N Scan Cash Register Review

Playskool Talk N Scan Cash Register
Average Reviews:

My son received this for his second birthday, he does enjoy playing with it but not for any long periods of time (like he will with many of his other toys). The cash register seems durable and it is cheap but that is really the only positives I can think of. It comes with 2 plastic "coins", 3 paper bills, and a hard plastic credit card. The machine says a series of phrases which have no relevance to the exact action you are doing. If you pass anything through the credit card slot, it will just say "that was $3" or "that is 1/2 off today). That doesn't even make sense and BTW you can make change for $3 b/c you don't have enough money to do so. The numbers on the keypad do not say their names, you can't add with it, etc. I really expected more, I do not anticipate that this toy will be played with a long time. I would much rather have an old fashioned cash register that made no noise where you could at least "pretend" without the incorrect answers of this machine getting in the way. I think I'm going to remove the batteries tomorrow and see if that works. Save your money and get something better. Oh, my son is gentle on his toys (he does not rip books and treats his toys with respect) if your child is not, the money will be gone within minutes as it is just flimsy paper money.

Pretend and Learn Cash Register Review

Pretend and Learn Cash Register

My 3 year old son just got this for his birthday and has been playing with it nonstop for days now! Best of all, the food from the LeapFrog shopping cart works with this cash register.
About 10 minutes after using this toy, my son was able to tell the difference between all of the coins and he loves to put the extra price tags on his other toys and scan them too!
The coins did get stuck one time so far, but it is really really easy to get them unstuck.
I would highly recommend this toy as a math, counting, learning toy!

Melissa & Doug Play Money Set Review

Melissa and Doug Play Money Set

I purchased this for my son's [...]classroom, and also one for our home. They're learning about money and using little paper laminated coins ... annoying! I brought this in and they were THRILLED to have it and it makes it more realistic to learn the coins and dollars with what they really look like. It's terrific at home, too - my kids set up a little store at home and buy things from each other. Much better product than anything I've seen out there.

Moonjar Classic Moneybox: Save, Spend, Share Review

Moonjar Classic Moneybox: Save, Spend, Share
Average Reviews:

This is a nice and attractive bank, but it's just tin, and in retrospect, since I shopped for this item in an attempt to help my son save and manage his money, a wiser move would have been to save the $25 and create our own bank using empty cans or jars. You could decorate three cans or jars with felt or fabric and they would do the job just as nicely. At 5 my son could care less if the money were kept in a fancy or man-made bank, but he would've had fun creating his own bank and I would've felt a little less guilty not having spent $25 + shipping and handling on this. The plus is that the 3 sections fit together nicely and thus do not take up much space. I'd give this a higher rating (for the value) if it cost $10 less.

Learning Resources Teaching Cash Register Review

Learning Resources Teaching Cash Register
Average Reviews:

My daughter got this for her birthday (3 years old). Even though she is not old enough yet to really count the money she has had a blast "ringing things up" on the scanner and paying with the credit card. She also really likes the coin slot. When she puts the money in it tells her what the coin was. She has done this over and over again. She is also having fun going around the house collecting items in her shopping cart and then ringing them up.
I can see this being a toy she will play with for many years. It has math games that seem like they will be fun and educational. Very nice, oh, and my dad observed that the coin slot works with real coins too!
The negatives... The drawer shoots out quickly and the plastic coins tend to slosh out. Also the weighing tray comes off easily. I'm going to put that away till my daughter gets a little older.
Overall- a great toy!

I had a toy safe back in the 70s. Exactly the same except the tumbler was steel. This one is plastic. As a result the tolerances are low - you can be out by 10 numbers and just exert some force and it will open. It's a pity they scrimped a few cents on the most important part.

Flowers Piggy Bank - Purple Review

Flowers Piggy Bank - Purple
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this piggy bank for my six-year-old pink-and-purple-loving daughter to properly keep the change that family members give her. The bank is roomy (bigger than the photo suggests--the body appears foreshortened in the picture), well-made, and lovely. A flexible rubber stopper keeps change from falling out of the bottom--it is easily removed and replaced for raiding the piggy bank.
As with any piece of ceramic, this one would withstand being dropped from a significant height onto a hard surface, so I would only consider it for a child mature enough to understand the need to handle objects with care. That being said, this bank is by no means "fragile"--the ceramic is fairly thick and the bank has a good, solid weight to it.
It's a quality bank--it makes a fine gift, and looks lovely sitting on a piece of white furniture.

Hasbro The Game of Life - Bikini Bottom SpongeBob SquarePants Edition Review

Hasbro The Game of Life - Bikini Bottom SpongeBob SquarePants Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this for my almost 5 and 6 yr olds who are big-time Spongebob fans. This game is absolutely adorable and loads of fun for our whole family! The board is an outrageously colorful and fun representation of Bikini Bottom. There are 3-D buildings of Patrick's, Squidward's, & Spongebob's houses, The Krusty Crab, The Chum Bucket, Mrs. Puff's Boating School, The Anchor, & The Shady Shoals Rest Home. The pawns are delightful and substantial 3-D plastic renditions of Spongebob, Patrick, Squidward, & Mr. Krabs that ALWAYS stay standing on their adequate base!! I can't stand those cheapo cardboard pawns with the tiny stands!!! There is no accumulation of children in this game version, but one does decide on whether to attend college or not (and pick a corresponding career), adopt a pet, and chose a home. There are life tiles($100 each)to earn for doing decent things and expenses to pay for unfortunate or typical Bikini Bottom life events. There are also Raffle cards to help earn extra money by game of chance spins. The writing on all of the cards is witty and humorous. I won't spill the beans about the pets, careers, homes, expenses, life cards or raffle cards because they are just so cute and funny!! My kids think the cards are a riot! The winner is determined once every player has reached Shady Shoals rest home by greatest net worth. The game moves along at just the right pace and my kids had no problem learning the rules. It is a great teacher of reading and money counting ($1,000's & $100's only)as well as decision making and consequences of behavior. Game play really does even out any skill level because much of the game is chance based by the numerical spinner to make your move. I paid full price for this game and I think it is well worth every penny! A++++++, FABULOUS GAME!!!!!!!

Rich Dad Cashflow 101 board game (VHS/Audio Tape) Review

Rich Dad Cashflow 101 board game (VHS/Audio Tape)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've played this at least a dozen times, and have to admit that the game itself is imperfect. However, it HAS taught me a number of things which Kiyosaki does not make clear in his books, and is essential practise for anyone wanting to take the next step after first having read the book.
My tips:
1. Read the book first before playing, otherwise it will probably all seem boring and too weird.
2. The game makes clear: The way to make passive cashflow is NOT on the positive cash flow from rental properties. (Suprised?) The rental income only secures the property, which you must be able to sell for a profit. The money made on the gains from selling the houses is then used to buy businesses - these are what give you the passive cashflow to finally "get out of the rat race."
3. Take the income statement sheet you've used playing the game and fill it out for your own life. You'll be surprised how little your free cash flow, and passive income really is. Use the excel worksheet to track your progess month to month. An excellent motivator.
Game Design Problems (and Fixes):
1. The cards which allow you to buy insanely low priced shares of stocks for $1, which you can be certain will go up to $20 or $40 later when the right card comes up. Life is not that predictable. Remove these cards from the deck.
2. Other players will frequently advise on what is a good deal or not. This is a mistake, because it doesn't allow other players to MAKE mistakes, and takes much of the fun out of the game. Instead, allow each player to make their choice to buy a property (or not) WITHOUT input, and only after let the other players give their opinion on this course of action.
3. The game takes a loooong time with 5-6 players. Since the players actions don't really affect each other, it is advisable to play with 3 players.
4. The game seems to suggest that the bank will allow you to borrow to purchase a business, this is usually not the case. Make it a rule not to allow this.
5. The interest rate charged on loans is excessive in the game. Set a more moderate rate of 1 % a month on all loans.
6. Don't get stuck playing this game over and over again, too afraid to apply the lessons in real life. (I've seen people paralyzed by fear, who keep playing the game instead of applying its lessons). Use it as a teaching tool, not a substitute!

Payday Review

Payday
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found my old game of Payday while visiting my mom's home in the summer, and played it many times with my kids, 8 and 4. They loved it, so I decided to buy a copy of the new version for our house. They still love playing it, but we are disappointed with some of the changes:
1) No savings option -- this is really disturbing, actually. You aren't given any incentive for saving your money anymore. There used to be a 10% interest payment on whatever you had in savings at the end of the month. For my money-conscious 8 year old, that was a GREAT lesson. Yes, they do still charge 10% interest on loans, but he has learned already not to borrow unless he has absolutely no other choice...
2) No insurance cards. The '70s version of the game had insurance cards that you could buy to protect yourself from automobile or medical bills. This was also a GREAT lesson that my son picked up on early. A shame this is no longer possible.
3) I wish there weren't quite so many "windfall" type opportunities -- too many lottery spaces, gambling options, etc. Too few regular bills and real life events. Nothing at all about work -- would have been nice to have some "you got a promotion" spaces that give you a salary raise (though I admit this is really hard to track in the Game of Life), etc.
In general, though, I agree that this is a fun game that even young kids seem to like (my 4YO is asking me to play it several times a day!), and a good way for kids to start learning about everyday money management.

The classic game of Payday makes family finance fun as it reminds everyone just where the money goes. Players take turns along the game board, which is designed as a 31-day calendar. You could make a big profit or lose your shirt on a bad investment and have to take out a loan to pay the bills as they pile up. Don't worry, you might win the lottery or hit the jackpot and pick up money. At the end of every month, you get paid. Play as many months as you like, pay off all your bills and figure out how much money you've got left. Whoever has the most money is the winner. Includes game board, four plastic tokens, one die, 64 deal and mall cards, savings and loan pad, paper money. For 2-4 players.

My granddaughter and I searched high and low for a good, classical piggy bank. It was surprisingly difficult to find one that wasn't tacky or that didn't look cheap. This is a wonderful bank, not of porcelain, although the same style is offered in ceramics, but of a durable rubber material that will endure. This bank was more expensive than others, but is a quality product.

Monopoly-Simpson's Electronic Edition Review

Monopoly-Simpson's Electronic Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the newest edition of The Simpsons Monopoly Game. Simply put, this game is great! Some changes from the older edition include a new board, new player pieces, and a few other cosmetic designs. The greatest and most obvious change though is the new Electronic Debit Card system. That's right: no cash involved whatsoever! This is a great feature that makes for some fun, fast and hassle-free play. Each player gets a card and makes all money transactions with the electronic gizmo included: just insert your card into either the pay or collect slot, punch in the numbers and keep the game rolling. This new feature really is the center point of this new edition. Otherwise it's mostly the Monopoly you've come to love. There's a colorful and easy-to-use rule book that gets you started quickly, and, as always, you're still at liberty to adjust certain rules to your liking without ruining the gameplay. The only real downside to this edition is that it could easily have been more Simpsons-oriented. You have the board and the tokens, but you don't really feel like you're in Springfield making a difference, or pitting your favorite characters together. If you play long enough, like an hour, it feels like typical Monopoly. I wish they would have found a way to immerse you more into The Simpsons theme, because it really just boils down to the board, the few small player tokens, the debit cards, and that's about it. If you love Monopoly and like The Simpsons, you will really enjoy this new electronic cash edition. If you LOVE The Simpsons and like Monopoly, you'll be pleased, but not thrilled.
