I'm sure the string is short in order to make it less of a choking hazard, but the pen was unusable for my generally coordinated 18-month-old. He was so excited to try this toy, but wound up crying with frustration trying to use the pen. Even after cutting the string, it's not intuitive which end is the correct end, and the magnet is pretty tiny on the end. Also found the chalkboard to be of pretty poor quality. Cute idea but an awful design.
