(More customer reviews)I bought this for my 1 year old son on his birthday, along with the flying saucer and the mobile moon base, and he loves it. The rocket has a nice height to it, and is very sturdy. The doors pop off easily on the rocket and the mobile moon base, and for young children, that's fantastic because it's already survived multiple moon crashes. If the doors weren't designed to come off, I know they would have broken off. So while mom might get frustrated having to keep putting the doors on, you at least know that this toy will last. I appreciate the simplistic and retro style of the rocket, yet it has a lot of detail that makes it a real winner.
The cockpit has the astronauts laying down facing an instrument panel, the way real astronauts do, and you can see some detail on the control panel that isn't just lithograms.
The 2nd part of the rocket is the most the most unique and most fun. It opens up to the living quarters with built in details like a coffee maker, a microwave, mugs, a toaster, and what looks like a washing machine. On the swinging door there is a bed that even has a divit in the pillow to allow the astronauts to rest comfortably. On the side of the bed are two nightstands with a night lamp on one side and books on the other. So cozy. And something that I don't think I've ever seen in any other toy, much less is a rocket is the feature where if you lift up the bed, it becomes the toilet. You can even see a little toilet paper roll. Again all this detail is part of the rocket so it won't get lost or break. I think of this little rocket as one awesome doll house for boys, although I'm sure girls would like it, too. Since I bought all three modules, I had duplicate astronauts, so I actually took a permanent marker and put eye lashes on 2 of them, and wala... now I have a whole family in space to explore new worlds and encounter aliens.
The wheels on the land rover (as well as the mobile moon base vehicles) are a soft yet firm rubber that makes it roll very nicely, and give more added realism. It can sit in the 3rd section of the rocket like a garage, and it also rolls down the indented track on the hatch door. Admittedly, this is the most annoying door because this one doesn't stay closed as nicely as the others for when you want to lock it up for space flight.
The alien and his crater will also store in the lower section of the rocket, but the crater also stores nicely under the rocket looking almost like fire, which is a neat feature that you can't help think was intentional, because this really does seem to be a very well thought out toy.
The rocket does make a couple sounds, one is a very simple sound that the rocket makes when it's not vertical; and the rocket thrusters light up while it makes the sound just for a second. When the rocket is vertical, Ground Control talks to Spaceship one and does a countdown- most delightfully with an echoe... "five, five, five, five. four, four, four, four....". it truly is the little details that make this rocket so much fun. At my son's birthday party, it got a lot of compliments and a lot of epople wanted to know where I got it. I've seen other rockets (some that are more elaborate but would be more suitable for older kids), but this one has the most delightful features that will spark imagination for many years. I definitely plan on keepign these toys for my sol for when he's an adult and can play with them with his kid(s). It's worthy enough, and it's sturdy enough.
For those that are interested in the mobile moon base and the flying saucer, I would highly recommend getting all three. The mobile moon base has a robot- how can you have space adventures without a robot? the dish on the back is movable to rotate where you want, and if you open the panels on the base, one side becomes steps and the other becomes the solar panels. There's some more detail like in the rocket (albeit not quite as quaint), like a pitcher and glass, a laptop, and the monitor that seems to be the communication to the rocket cockpit. The base hitches up to the ATV plow and the scoop on the plow raises and lowers. The robot fits everywhere that the astronauts fit in the base as well as in the rocket. There are no sounds or lights on the mobile moon base.
The flying saucer, on the other hand, is the set with the most noises and most lights, and unfortunately the least amount of detail. There are 6 different sounds form 4 different buttons on the spaceship, and the lights around the flying saucer do different things for each of the sounds. Pressing one of the buttons on the generic cockpit (no detail here like the rocket), makes it sound like the aliens are talking to each other. What I like to think of as the giant death ray on the top of the flying saucer does indeed make a nice handle to fly the saucer around. There is also a 7th sound effect and light display when opening and closing the plastic cockpit "window". It's truly a nice touch.
Altogether, these sets were more more money than I wanted to spend, but I'm extremely glad that I did. And if it sounds like I'm more excited about them than my 1 year old, that's probably true. If you couldn't tell from how much I've gone and on about this toy, I genuinely enjoy playing with these toys with my son.
